Art, Cab Franc, and George

One of the things I love about living near NYC is how it’s such a hub for the wine industry. We have visiting wine makers, wine families, and top tier professionals come into town all the time!

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Executive Winemaker and Consultant George Bursick of Maxville Wines. We met for lunch at https://www.societyillustrators.org/ , it’s a really cute spot right on 63rd street. There are all different illustrations on exhibit, even a Norman Rockwell on display.

I was warmly greeted by George Bursick upon arrival. Not only is he now the man behind Maxville Wine making, he’s also amoung the generation of wine makers who have shaped the Californian wine industry to what it is today.  George holds a Masters Degree in Enology from UC Davis.

George has had a very successful career so far. He helped identify the first Syrah vines in California for commercial use. While working with Ferrari-Carano, his 1985 Chardonnay was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. During George’s career many of his wines have been rated 90+ points.

Despite his many accomplishments George has managed to maintain an array of hobbies and varied interests. George is a talented drummer. In fact, many rock stars have enjoyed his wines over the years! He also enjoys traveling, gardening, fly fishing, and boating.

One of the wines that particularly stand out from the afternoon is the Maxville Cabernet Franc 2015.

What I love about this wine is that I can simultaneously get herbaceous notes like bell pepper and also fruity notes like blackberry or cherry. It’s a full bodied wine. The tannins are velvety, which have been softened by the oak aging. It’s a great food wine! I also think this wine would be a great holiday crowd pleaser.

Maxville also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petite Sirah. With over 100 acres of land to grow vines, Maxville currently has plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Verdot, and Petite Sirah

This March I will be heading to San Francisco and Napa Valley. I am hoping to pay them a visit in their beautiful tasting room! My advice is to keep an eye on Maxville Wines! I think BIG things are coming our way! 😉
