It’s not very often that you have the chance to meet winemaker and CEO of one of the most recognized Maremma brands in Italy with the #1 selling DOCG red wine in Italy. Andrea’s family has lived in the Tuscan region for many generations. This year the Cecchi family will be celebrating 125 years of fine wine making. Andrea is the fourth generation Cecchi to take over the family business. Andrea and his family own 5 vineyards and grow over 20 grape varieties. All grapes are grown with respect to the environment. His wines have been acclaimed by wine critics such as James Suckling and Kerin O’Keefe of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. They are available for retail purchase or enjoyed in upscale restaurants in NYC and beyond. One such restaurant is Catch NYC in the Meatpacking district. This is where I had the pleasure of meeting both Andrea and his daughter Giulia .
The night began with introductions and of course, some Vermentino. I was joined by Josephine Liz of Terlato Wines (who organized the meeting), Chelsie Petras of Chel Loves Wine, and Marlena Hoffman of Beverage Media.
The Vermentino is great as an accompaniment to light appetizers and salads, or as an appetito. We had it with an assortment of tartar and salad. The Mora Vermentino expresses itself with unique inklings of succulent summer fruit, with its ripe pulps and fresh and fragrant style.
The next wine we tried was the Tuscan Red blend. This is a great crowd pleasing red that is 50% merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon.
La Mora Maremma Toscanna 2015 has a Mediterranean ora and fruity character! Ruby red colored wine, bright and aromatic. There are red berries and spice on the nose. They use second and third use oak. On the palate here are notes of raspberry and blackberry with soft and supple tannins. This is excellent with grilled meats! 🥩
Of course no wine dinner would be complete unless we opened another bottle of red! The next bottle showcased was the Sangiovese.
And last but certainly not least was the 2015 Cecchi Valore Di Famiglia Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, a personal favorite of mine. This wine is made entirely with Sangiovese, this opens with aromas of ripe black berries, and leather. On the palate there is ripe black cherry, clove, licorice and white pepper. The tannins are pleasantly fine tannins. Definitely find this one to try and buy!!
This was a very memorable evening, even though we all had a lot of wine! I certainly won’t forget my night with the lovely Cecchi Family.
Xoxo
