Chapel Down English Sparkling

Happy Wine Wednesday, Winos! It’s been a while since we’ve posted because we’ve been really busy promoting Dan’s Rosé Soirée.

Anyways, on Friday I (Amanda) had the most amazing wine experience. Yes, those do happen from time to time! Charlotte aka @Madampalate invited me to a wine tasting/meet the wine maker event at Pure Liquid. It’s in the One World Trade Shopping Center in the financial district.

Josh Donaghay-Spire is the chief wine maker at Chapel Down located in Kent. A group of us met with him and we were introduced to 3 of his sparkling wines. Prior to this meeting, I have never tried any wines from the UK 🇬🇧. I went into this meeting with an open mind and really didn’t know what to expect! I found the timing of this event perfect as the Royal wedding was on Saturday. Wouldn’t you know, they served English Sparkling there ! 👏🏻

I brought home a bottle of their classic non-vintage brut. Chapel down practices hand harvesting. The fruit undergoes cool fermentation followed by full malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures on its fine lees in tank for six months. Once bottled, the wine is then aged on its lees for 9 – 24 months.

The non-vintage Brut is a Pinot Noir dominated blend. There is a clarity and elegance to this sparkling wine that is captivating! I found myself quickly wanting another glass. There are aromas of red apple, lemongrass and freshly baked bread. I also noted hints of strawberry and apple on the palate and fine persistent bubbles.

This sparkling wine retails $48-50. When compared with champagnes and other sparkling in the same price range the quality is unmatched. I found this wine to be on par, if not better than its competitors.

Hopefully, I have another opportunity to try Chapel Down Wines again! I certainly, won’t forget this one! This is their website;
